Brodie’s Free Walking Tour of Lagos: A Journey Through Time and Culture
Join us for a captivating 2-hour walking tour through the heart of Lagos, where history, culture, and iconic figures come to life. Led by Brodie, an Australian tour guide living in Lagos on and off for 17 years. Brodie’s Free Walking Tour will immerse you in the fascinating stories that shaped this coastal town and the broader history of Portugal.
Some things we’ll cover on this guided tour:
- The Great Earthquake of 1755:
Discover the dramatic events surrounding one of the most devastating natural disasters in European history. Learn about the Lisbon Earthquake and its far-reaching impact on Lagos, a coastal town that felt the tremors and experienced the tragedy of the moment. Hear how the quake reshaped Portuguese society, architecture, and even philosophy.
- The Carnation Revolution:
Step into the era of change as we explore the peaceful revolution of 1974 that ended decades of dictatorship in Portugal. Gain insights into the remarkable, almost bloodless overthrow of an authoritarian regime, symbolized by the red carnations that gave the revolution its name.
- Iconic Portuguese Figures:
From explorers to poets, Portugal has produced some of the most influential figures in history. Along our walk, we’ll highlight the lives and legacies of key individuals who helped shape not only Portugal but the world.
- Portuguese Food and Drink:
No visit to Portugal is complete without tasting its culinary delights. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to the rich flavors of Portuguese cuisine. Hear about local specialties such as *bacalhau* (salt cod), *pastéis de nata* (custard tarts), Cataplana and the world-famous Portuguese wines, including the celebrated *Vinho Verde*. Each walker will receive Brodie´s Tips, a document with my recommended restaurants from local experience.
- The Beautiful Streets of Lagos:
Wander through the charming streets, with their cobbled alleys, vibrant squares, and stunning coastal views. Also learn about some further walks to do both here in Lagos and throughout the Algarve.
